Ice Lolly Face

My little girl is rather greedy. Whenever she sees me eating, she will make her way over and move her lips tantalisingly. If that doesn't work, she'll gulp her saliva and that usually gets her a small nibble of what we're having, provided it's baby-safe and not too tasty (lest she gets used to yummy-tasting stuff and refuses her bland porridge).

A few weeks ago, we let her try New Zealand All Naturals Berry Sorbet. Watch how she comes back for more despite finding the taste weird.

What's for breakfast?

Malaysia is not a place for people with gluten, diary, soy, nut and egg allergies. And it's most definitely not a place for foodlovers with the same allergies. See picture for what I've been having for breakfast the past few weeks.

Okay, I had Marmite with my buckwheat and rice crackers just that once (and once was quite enough, believe me!) but those crackers are basically a bread replacement so I eat them with tuna, bacon, set honey or jam. It took a while to acquire the taste for them but they're quite nice when toasted actually.

For lunch and dinner, I am stuck with either rice, porridge, soupy meehoon or kway teow (variants of rice noodles) and amazingly, I'm ALWAYS hungry. And I mean ravenous! For someone who's been on a low-carbo diet for the past 4 years, I'm eating enough carbo per meal to feed a platoon of soldiers! Annoyingly, most Asian dishes are cooked with soy sauce so I've no choice but to avoid them too. At home though we've been substituting it with fish sauce in all our stirfries.

The good (unbelievable though it is) part about being on this diet is, buttoned-down shirts and tight blouses aside, I can now fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes including my jeans! Of course they're still more than a little snug but that's not the point. And all this while I believed that eating less carbo was the be-all and end-all of weight loss!

I could probably start a new phenomenon now. Wanna lose weight? Eat rice! Lots of it! Move over Atkins and South Beach!

Spring!

After three years of being planted, the African Tulip Tree in front of our house has finally begun to sprout its vermillion flowers. We were beginning to think that we were unfortunate enough to get an infertile one but turns out it was just a late bloomer.

While typing the above paragraph, I was suddenly reminded of how the colour vermillion was my favourite when I was in primary school. Back then, it was not enough to just have 12 or even 24 colour pencils. Many schoolgirls were clamouring to have their own set of 36 that came in a metal box with Japanese cartoon characters on it. And we used to have them all perfectly sharpened.

The other thing that was all the rage were those pencil cases with a million and one secret spring-loaded compartments triggered by buttons. Those cost a small fortune each. I never had one but used to find any excuse to play with those belonging to my lucky classmates. Gosh! How much money Sanrio made from us gullible consumers.

It's a good thing they're no longer a trend. Can't imagine my children carrying all that extra weight in their schoolbags!
